Dr Nina Araneta-Alana is an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow at the ANU College of Law. She joined the ANU in 2023 as part of the ARC Discovery Project ‘Reconceiving Engagement with International Law in a Populist Era.’ She was conferred her PhD in International Law by the University of Melbourne. She is a member of the Institute for International Law and the Humanities, and the Cities and Environment Research Network. Dr Araneta-Alana has extensive experience in institutional international law providing significant legal support to development projects in Asia.

In this seminar, Dr Nina Araneta-Alana explores the challenges and opportunities for human rights in the Philippines following the populist policies of the Duterte administration. She explores the weakened human rights landscape but highlights research pointing out to ongoing international engagement as a path toward reform. She will then offer recommendations to strengthen domestic accountability and foster a more resilient human rights framework, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with global human rights mechanisms and civil society.
