Episode 15 features three Planetary Health Equity Hothouse PhD researchers, who will reflect on the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) and the role of international venues of negotiation to address the multiple crises we face.
The 29th Conference of the Parties UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will begin on 11th November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Different from previous COP events filled with long-coming announcements (such as the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund, the inclusion of ‘fossil fuels’ wording in the official negotiations, and health and climate related declarations), COP29 seems to be less ambitious. Indeed, many have become sceptical of what multilateral negotiations can achieve. What practical outcomes could we expect from COP29? What are the implications of such international venues for planetary health equity? And what could we expect from different actors? The panel will share their perspectives on these questions grounded in their expertise and current research work.
The Saving the World Webinar Series is presented by the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse, the series discusses the intersections between climate change, inequity, and human health. The focus is on actions that enable transformative change away from the harmful consumptogenic system to systems that promote good health, social equity and environmental wellbeing.

Giorgia Dalla Libera Marchiori
Giorgia (Gio) is a Laureate PhD candidate at the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse. Her PhD investigates health philanthropy’s research agenda and its implications for the achievement of planetary health equity. Originally trained as a biomedical scientist, Gio worked with various non-profit organisations focused on global health and sustainability.
Roxana-Claudia Tompea
Roxana is a Laureate PhD candidate at the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse. Her research examines food regulation and means of curbing greenwashing in ultra-processed foods in the European Union. Roxana is a communication specialist with a passion for sustainable development.
Cynthia Couette
Cynthia is doing a PhD in cotutelle in International Relations at Laval University and in Regulation and Governance at the Australian National University. Her work focuses on the influence of nonstate actors in the global governance of public goods. More precisely, she studies the space and the health global governance structures.
Nick Frank
Dr Nicholas Frank is a Laureate Research Fellow with the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse in the School of Regulation and Global Governance. Prior to this, he was an Associate Lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University. Nicholas specializes in the political economy of trade and investment governance.
